Over the last several months, this author been stressing the need for America to urgently develop clean, cheap, limitless nuclear fusion energy to generate the vast amounts of electricity we will need if we are successfully to compete with China in the new frontier of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Until now, the US has been are promoting reactors for controversial nuclear fission energy, as in Chernobyl. The urgent strategic reason for our nation to invest in securing this technology is to protect our superpower status as democracy’s champion.

Fusion energy is not only cheap, clean and limitless, it is also the “engine” that will drive the enormous increases in artificial intelligence (AI) that will be the ultimate super-weapon of this century. AI requires electricity — enormous amounts of it — that only fusion energy can generate cleanly, cheaply and in unlimited amounts. If there were a formula for who will dominate the 21st century, it would be: Fusion Energy + AI = World Supremacy.

At first glance, it was another stunning triumph for President Donald J. Trump. The Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit on July 15 included more than $90 billion in “energy and AI investments,” and high praise for companies that would build their own electricity plants to accommodate the doubling of electricity that it is estimated will be needed for Artificial Intelligence ventures to ensure that China will not end up overtaking the US in the fields of AI, energy and quantum computing.

With Washington incentivizing fossil and fission as strategic sources of America’s power in President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” the future of fusion energy is being championed by the newly formed 21st Century Fusion Power – Manhattan Project in recognition that the nation which conquers this game-changing technology will dominate the remainder of this century.

The last visitors from the planet Earth departed the Moon in December of 1972. No one has returned to that distant destination, and yet there is now a Moon-mining startup that has signed contracts to excavate and return to Earth thousands of liters of an element called helium-3 that sits just beneath the lunar surface, starting in the year 2029. The company, Interlune, has entered into an agreement to provide this rare and expensive resource to Maybell Quantum, a company whose CEO Corban Tillemann-Dick “wants to use Interlune’s helium-3 for his company’s special refrigerators that cool quantum devices to near-absolute zero temperatures.”

There is an old adage many of us heard from our parents, “It’s not what you say, it’s what you do.” So when China creates military equipment that demonstrates a growing skill at an amphibious invasion, it would be best to ignore their rhetoric and concentrate on what they are doing to create the skills, tactics and ability to invade that democratic bastion across the Taiwan Strait. As students of history, the Communist giant’s rulers knows full well the difficulty of any invasion that comes from the sea.

A visionary, an entrepreneur, a futurist, and perhaps one of the most creative of his generation, one still needs to spend considerable time in reading the comments of Elon Musk to determine his current opinion regarding fusion energy. Prior published interviews suggest he has been a very strong proponent of solar and wind power, energy sources that have brought Europe to its knees economically and that, understandably, are not currently in favor at the White House.

President Donald Trump is no fan of wind turbines. Grounded in the economics of business, he appreciates that the energy rate of return for the enormous investment required to build wind turbines makes little sense. He remains focused on some of America’s greatest energy resources, domestic fossil fuels, making us not only capable of running our economy but independent of foreign crude and those control that spigot.

Eighty years ago this summer, the United States would assure its role as a global superpower for generations to come by harnessing its scientific, industrial and military resources under the code name, “The Manhattan Project,” creating a war-winning weapon, the atomic bomb. President Donald Trump now has the means to repeat history by funding a 2025 version of the Manhattan Project that guarantees our access to all the energy we will need to power this century.
